Cyclospora Outbreak

There is currently an outbreak of cyclospora in the US. Cyclospora is a parasite that is passed through contaminated food or water; it is not usually spread from person-to-person. The current outbreak is linked to eating fresh produce. Cyclospora infections can cause mild symptoms and usually resolve without treatment. However, some patients develop watery diarrhea, fever and/or abdominal pain. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following:

•                  Visit a clinician if you have watery diarrhea lasting more than 3 days or if you have trouble staying hydrated

•                 Thoroughly wash fresh produce with running water and follow safe food handling practices

•                 Cook produce to 158 degrees F when possible
